7 Ideas for Place Cards for your Wedding

When you’re looking for ideas for styling the tables at your wedding the most important thing is to pick something that will make your heart sing on the day. With that in mind, here are some ideas that may take your fancy. And I don’t just think these ideas work for weddings - in my opinion all special events are enhanced with a bit more table decoration - even if I do feel a bit bossy dictating where people sit.

If you’ve spotted something you like below, then please get in touch here.

  1. Keep it simple

Maybe you are going for a really paired back and sophisticated look, or maybe you have a lot of other elements on your table that you don’t want to distract from. Black calligraphy on white card is always going to look beautiful. Think about whether you want a more traditional or whimsical style of calligraphy to fit in with your look.

2. Coordinate the ink colour with your wedding colours

A good calligrapher will be able to match the ink colour to any elements of your existing wedding designs, whether that’s part of your stationery, bridesmaids dresses, or flowers. Alternatively you can opt for card in a colour that works with your scheme.

3. Add painted decorative touches

Little bows, scalloped edges, or elements from your wedding invites can all make your place cards look more like you, and help them to tie in with your chosen scheme.

4. Have a custom shape and experiment with ways to display them

This idea makes my toes wiggle a bit with excitement, even if you will spend far too much time in the supermarket picking the most charming looking lemons.

It’s possible to get your place cards die-cut in all manner of interesting shapes, so let your imagination go wild.

5. Add some origami

Whilst origami cranes are more traditionally associated with weddings, I love the idea of boats, sailing away into the future. Any younger guests are sure to think they’re great to play with too.

6. Leave paper place cards behind in favour of fabric

Adding embroidery to fabric makes for something that your guests will really treasure, and hopefully use again and again. I offer embroidered gift tags, which would work brilliantly as place cards. Guest names on linen bows or their own personalised napkin would make for the most beautiful table settings.

7. Have you thought about tambourines instead of place cards?

Or any other percussion for that matter. They bridge the gap between place card and wedding favour and are the perfect way to get the party started. I love them adorned with ribbons.
